Madness Rules


RULES 2020


  1. Requested entry fee/donation for the 2020 pool is $25 per single entry. For any individual who makes an additional charitable donation the entry reverts to $20 which it has been for over 20 years. $10 of the original $25 goes to charity, $15 goes to the prize pool.  For subsequent individual entries, $5 of the entry goes to charity and $15 again goes to the prize pool. Checks should be made out to John P. Morgan, MD. The committee receives no compensation or financial remuneration for this entertaining and charitable endeavor. Additionally, all expenses in the institution, delivery, and completion of this pool, including print, time, software, web server, and mailing expenses are covered by benevolence.


2) Additional charitable contributions are encouraged. If you desire a record of your

contribution (for tax purposes or other) please make out an additional check payable directly to the charity (either The March Madness Endowment Fund or the additional charities we decide we are contributing to this year. Your check will be forwarded accordingly. Otherwise, just add additional funds with your entry check made out to John P. Morgan, MD


3) Please mail your entry donations and additional contributions to the following address prior to the commencement of the tournament:

4) Enter as often as you wish via WEB SITE ENTRY at GaryGurtcheff.com Post your name and requested demographics carefully. Fill out all information. For multiple entries, make a separate name for each entry.  Do not use the exact same name for multiple entrees.  Change the entry name, or add a number such as John Doe 1, John Doe 2, John Doe 3 for multiple entries. The web site will be open to accept entrees sometime after the brackets have been announced Sunday evening, March 15th. You must enter prior to the first game on Thursday morning, March 19th.  Thereafter the pool is closed. The play-in games (March 17 and 18) do not factor in regard to the deadline. We cannot add entrees after the Thursday games begin. Also, DO NOT WAIT until the last minute to enter. The server may not be able to accomodate your last minute entrees due to increased internet traffic and we cannot micromanage the entrees.


5) VENMO payment is AN OPTION.  Find jpmorganmd on Venmo. or access via jpmorganmd@mac.com  or 812-306-7447 You can also add extra contributions that way.  Leave or send a note with what entry names and for whom you are paying for


6) Fill in each bracket (your predicted winner) for each game of each round, out through to the finals. Make certain each line is filled in. You must include the winner of every game, including the championship game. Their is NO formal tiebreaker (points or otherwise).


7) Points are accumulated for each correctly picked victory by multiplying the team's seed by the round value(1,2,4,8,16, and 32) for rounds 1 through 6 respectively.

Round Values: 



Scoring is cumulative. You are rewarded for picking the upsets.

Scoring Examples:

1. You predicted correctly that a second-seeded team would beat a seventh-seeded

team in the second round. 4 points are awarded.

2. You predicted correctly that a thirteenth-seeded team would beat a first-seeded

team in the third round. 52 points are awarded.

3. You predicted correctly that a sixth-seeded team would win the finals. 192 points

are awarded.

4. You predicted INCORRECTLY that a ninth-seeded team would beat an eight-seed

in the first round. No points are awarded.


8) Updates and current standings will be posted on the web site

(WWW.GARYGURTCHEFF.COM). All information will be available on the web site or through e-mail.


9) All decisions of the tournament committee are final. For questions regarding the tournament in
